THE UNION CITY DEMONSTRATION PROJECT
In 1937, when Roosevelt Stadium opened in Union City, NJ, 11,000
fans crowded the arena they had waited 20 years for and proclaimed, "Union City today takes its place in the sun".
In late summer 2005, the Stadium known as Rosey was demolished to
make way for the new Emerson High School - a facility that will
include a synthetic turf stadium 40’ above street level on the roof.
The 366,000 SF High School will house over 1,700 students when completed in 2008. The state-of-the-art complex includes a 400 car parking garage, a 1,000 seat Performing Arts Center, 98
classrooms and a 125,000
SF rooftop playing field, complete with lighting, bleachers and
capable of accommodating 4,500 spectators.
This $178 million project received final approval/designation as a “Demonstration Project” by the New Jersey Schools
Development Authority (formerly New Jersey School Construction
Corporation) in December 2004.
One of only six such projects in the State, the new Emerson High School is designed and built under a Guaranteed Maximum Price, Construction Management project delivery system. Structured as a true public/private partnership, and located in a redevelopment zone, the project is being funded by the N.J.S.D.A. in conjunction with the Union City Redevelopment Agency, Union City Board of Education, the Union City Parking Authority, the City of Union City and Summit Redevelopers.
Epic Management has provided complete preconstruction and construction management services, including oversight of all land acquisition, remediation, demolition and new construction.
Design is by Rivardo Schnitzer Capazzi in affiliation with HOK.
